Especially for Internship Directors

Q.   What should I know about your program?

These 5 facts:

  1. The Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology is a university-based doctoral program, jointly sponsored by :

The College of William and Mary
    Eastern Virginia Medical School
    Norfolk State University
    Old Dominion University

Each partner is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Program has been accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1982.

  2. Research is an integral component of our Program and an empirical dissertation is a degree requirement. We fund 100% of our students; put another way, we admit only those students we will fund.  All students are funded by graduate assistantships. GAs include teaching and research opportunites.

  3. We admit only 10 students per year, even though our core faculty numbers twenty-two. We believe this is evidence of a strong commitment to training that suggests our students will be well prepared for internship. Because our students are well known to faculty and supervisors, you can expect information provided by the Virginia Consortium to be direct and pertinent to training.

  4. Practicum hours reported by a Virginia Consortium student are an exact record of his or her hours of clinical experience. Hours are summarized from individual, documented reports that follow APPIC guidelines. Supervisors evaluate students twice during each practicum;and before the student can be credited with the experience, the supervisor must sign off on both reports. Hours reported by Virginia Consortium students are, therefore, straightforward and uninflated.

Virginia Consortium students complete required practicum work in 8 semesters during 3 calendar years.

  5. Ours is a practitioner-scientist model; we award the Psy.D. degree.

Q.   Anything else I can take back to an evaluating committee?
