Global Marine Species Assessment - Coral Triangle Office
The IUCN/CI Global Marine Species Assessment (GMSA) has an office in Manila, Philippines. The Coral Triangle GMSA office concentrates on collecting information on marine species in the Coral Triangle region (the Indo-Malay-Philippine marine biodiversity triangle) needed for evaluation under IUCN Red List Criteria. The impetus for this office originated in the finding that the central Philippines has more marine species per unit area than any other place on earth (Carpenter and Springer, 2005).
This research prompted Philippine President Gloria Arroyo to sign an executive order on biodiversity and for First Philippine Conservation Incorporated (FPCI) to donate over 1 million US dollars to marine conservation. The FPCI project is titled the Verde Island Passage Center of the Center of Marine Biodiversity project. As part of this project FPCI is supporting two GMSA positions in Manila. A third position is supported directly by the GMSA. In total, these positions include two Marine Red List Officers and one Senior Marine Red List Officer. Kent Carpenter, the GMSA Director, supervises these positions and helps integrate their work in the overall GMSA project, as well as lend assistance to the CI/FPCI Center of the Center project.
The information and assessments from the Philippines will feed directly into the Coral Triangle Initative, providing a baseline of sound scientific information on threatened species for the region.
